If you are going to learn to ski this week then it's a fair assumption that you'll be spending some time with a ski instructor!! They are generally a social lot, although their command of the English language can be somewhat shaky - this isn't really a problem as pointing, demonstrating and shaking there heads goes a long way to convey the message they are trying to put across.

I always think they look a little funny, with their perma-tan look - ski instructors tend to be somewhat leather faced due to many hours in the reflective snow.

I've spoken to many over the years and in contrast to what you might think they are none too glamorous, often the winter ski instructor works the summer as a farm hand or labourer further down the valley!!

You won't get a choice of instructor, you'll just be put in a beginners class and s/he'll be well competent to teach you, it really is just a question of watch and copy! The first day or two is realising that falling over is ok and overcoming your fears.

After a day or two of skiing I think you should notice quite a difference to your skiing abilities and your confidence on your skis - this really is the time to consider booking a private lesson, they really are cheaper than you'd think, an afternoon's private lesson will cost less than calling out a plumber back at home!

Believe me, your skiing will improve dramatically with a couple of private lessons, it really is never too early to start working on correct style, I feel you'll get a lot more from your learn to ski holiday if you throw a couple of private lessons into the mix...

... with an unofficial added bonus, you may well find that if you book the same ski instructor for private lessons as you have for the group ski classes then when you are doing the group classes again the next day, you may possibly get more of your fair share of attention - double value!!
